Free Love and Polyamory

Relationships are very important to all individuals, because it is through the bonds we form, our fraternal and friendship ties, that we reveal and maintain our emotions and psychological balance to withstand the weight of daily life.

When we engage in romantic relationships, due to a social construct, we begin to feel entitled to be part of other people's lives and, in a way, try to control the events that happen around them. However, this feeling only arises due to feelings of possession and jealousy encouraged by patriarchy and also by social pressure that encourages individuals to invest in a relationship until marriage. But this point of view may be becoming obsolete due to new perspectives that have emerged since relationships have become fluid and unstable. Because of this societal shift, relationships have reached a state of polyamory and free love.

Polyamory is when a couple opens their relationship to a third individual. However, such a relationship is only possible if feelings of jealousy and possessiveness don't negatively affect the partner's life. After all, for a healthy relationship to exist, partners need to be loyal to each other and to themselves; loyalty is essential for a relationship to last.

By adding a third person to a relationship, if that third person has relationships with both partners, it becomes polyamorous, but it remains a closed relationship. If the person can be with whomever they want, it's not polyamory but rather open relationship.

Open relationship is what people nowadays call "casual dating," but polyamory is a relationship as serious as a conventional one and also closed, but with one more person participating. And where does the perspective of a future come in in such relationships?

In a fast-paced world where relationships tend to be fleeting, it's difficult to find someone willing to commit to a serious relationship, due to the uncertainties and instabilities hanging over the future.

Relationships cannot and should not be prisons. After all, if a partner is the complementary half that helps us navigate daily life and have a lighter life, then if they become the opposite, they cease to fulfill their purpose of completeness and become a hindrance to the other. From this perspective, whatever relationship an individual and their partner choose, the main ingredient must be completeness and mutual support.

Society tends to have herd behavior, but the most important aspect of freedom is allowing the other person to be free as well.
