Power relations in everyday interactions.

"We choose our partners based on how we believe we deserve to be loved and treated."

In every relationship, through shared living and the exchange of experiences, a person gradually reveals how they wish to be treated. This is not defined by what they say, but rather by the actions they take and the behaviors they accept. Consequently, every relationship involves power dynamics on a microcosmic scale—that is, within a small, organized whole; or, to put it another way, a form of micropolitics.

A relationship can be viewed much like an alliance between two nations. To propose a hypothetical scenario for analysis, imagine the Kingdom of Earth and the Water Tribe deciding to form an alliance. Agreements emerge from this partnership that favor only one party—let us assume, for this example, the Water Tribe—and the Kingdom of Earth accepts these terms. Once ratified, these agreements begin to undermine the Kingdom of Earth’s economy while causing the Water Tribe’s economy to flourish. Eventually, the Kingdom of Earth becomes destabilized and faces the risk of collapse—spiraling into debt with little chance of recovering its status as a power—at which point the Water Tribe decides to dissolve the alliance, deeming it no longer advantageous.

This illustrates a macropolitical perspective—specifically regarding international relations—where the unfair manner in which the Water Tribe acted (benefiting itself at the Kingdom of Earth's expense) played a key role. Yet, the fundamental question remains: Why did the alliance persist for as long as it did? In a relationship where one person feels that the other's company benefits them—even at the cost of sacrifices—a choice has clearly been made: the choice to accept those sacrifices to maintain the relationship. However, the moment that benefit ceases, the stronger party can easily walk away unscathed, leaving the other person completely destabilized.

Generally speaking, good communication between the parties is essential to ensure that agreements and exchanges remain fair. In a romanticized view that prioritizes the "here and now," it is easy to focus solely on the pleasures of companionship; a more realistic perspective, however, requires considering the time invested. If only one party is truly benefiting as things progress, it is easy to foresee an outcome where one person ends up disadvantaged—far removed from a "happily ever after."

Therefore, what is needed is not just good communication, but a well-crafted plan of action with a clear vision for the future. This allows both individuals to grow—with one developing through the other's support—creating a fair exchange between them. Even if the relationship eventually ends, both parties will have the opportunity to continue progressing without facing unfair disadvantage.
